One online review says GOLD Restaurant is a “vibrant one-of-a-kind experience of all things African; brace yourself for a cornucopia of taste sensations and an evening of opulent feasting”. GOLD offers guests an opportunity to sample cuisine from Cape Town’s iconic Cape Malay kitchens, as well as much-loved traditional African dishes. The entire menu is served at the table as a set tasting menu.
Guests are entertained by tall, graceful Mali puppets which dance around the tables accompanied by drummers, dancers and singers. The live entertainment is unique with a heady combination of Cape Malay and Africa intertwined in the line-up; guests can participate every evening in an interactive drum circle where they’re taught the different sounds and rhythms of the ‘djembe’.
Cape Town’s famous restaurant is about more than delicious food and invigorating entertainment; the people of GOLD are captivating. Staff members are from all over the African continent and embody a continental thread that weaves through every element of the restaurant experience.
Green Point is a vibrant suburb on the Atlantic Seaboard and ideally positioned close to the impressive Cape Town Stadium, a diverse selection of night clubs and bars and the Sea Point Promenade. It’s affectionately known as the ‘Soho of Cape Town’, boasting a lively nightlife, excellent restaurants and awesome coffee shops.
Visitors have a choice of everything from Cubana Latino Café; a restaurant-come-bar that turns into a busy nightclub over the weekends to Nu Health Food Café; serving additive-free breakfasts, salads, wraps and green juices for the health gurus of Cape Town.
Green Point was established by the Dutch East India Company in the early 1800s as a cattle grazing station. When Cape Town was a British Colony, the village became a social hub for the posh and landed gentry. Horse racing events were held in the open parklands as well as racing events with everything from elegant horse-drawn carriages to the ‘paardewagon’ competing for a prized trophy.
The Green Point lighthouse was constructed in 1820 and was the first of its kind in southern Africa. Unfortunately the ancient lighthouse did not stand up well to the hardships of the Cape weather and fell into a state of decay. It was renovated in 1842 and its height increased in 1863 by the addition of a new tower. The Green House Lighthouse is the oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa and is a national heritage site; it was first lit in April 1824 and remains an iconic landmark on the Atlantic Seaboard.
