Belmont Mount Nelson Hotel

The magnificent Belmont Mount Nelson Hotel is a striking pink historical building which lies at the feet of Table Mountain in the lush Gardens suburb in Cape Town. It is an example of timeless indulgence with touches of modern eccentricity which comes through in its exquisitely restored interiors. Belmont Mount Nelson Hotel is an iconic landmark and one of Cape Town’s top five-star hotels.

The grand hotel has welcomed the rich and famous since it opened its doors in 1899 to the first-class passengers that stepped off an elite British shipping liner. Winston Churchill affectionately called her the Pink Lady; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle held seances in his room and more recently, Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Lenny Kravitz and the Dalai Lama have crossed its gracious threshold.

It made the Sunday papers all those years ago as the first hotel to offer hot and cold running water; since then it has become a sought-after destination for Capetonians and visitors who can at least enjoy a decadent High Tea experience at the hotel, if they can’t join the legends of rock stars and celebrities who pay handsomely to spend a few nights in the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel.

The High Tea experience is complete with a selection of Nellie’s loose-leaf tea blends and a sweet and savoury spread which has to be seen to be believed. It includes delicate finger sandwiches, rich dark chocolate cakes, plump scones with clotted cream and preserves as well as South Africa’s unique confectionary treats which always includes melktert (milk tart).

High Tea is served in the immaculately-appointed colonial-style lounge or outside on the grand terrace or in the hotel’s spectacular garden. The Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel boasts 9 hectares of beautifully maintained gardens with long walkways lined with fragrant rose bushes. Babbling fountains and carpets of lush green lawn create an oasis setting in what is essentially the heart of the commercial business district in Cape Town.
