This scenic tour takes you on a circular route from Cape Town over the magnificent Sir Lowry’s Pass to the seaside town of Hermanus; returning to Cape Town on the coastal road and passing through quaint seaside villages such as Onrus, Sandbaai and Pearly Beach with a quick stop in Betty’s Bay to see a colony of penguins.

Apart from being a beautiful and fun place to visit, Hermanus is the best land-based location for sightings of Southern Right whales (whale watching season is from August to November). A whale-crier alerts visitors of whales in the bay using a kelp horn.

Once a sleepy retirement village, Hermanus has exploded in popularity and now boasts incredible restaurants, large shopping centres and a fantastic street market. It has some of the most spectacular beaches on that section of the coast and valuable marine estuaries. A visit to the old and new working harbour is interesting, as well as a stroll along the long coastal walkway that takes you from the harbour to the outskirts of town with incredible views of the rocky beaches and Indian Ocean.

Holidaymakers who visit Hermanus are usually outdoor enthusiasts; it’s a hotspot for crayfishing, deep sea diving and fishing as well as kayaking and surfing. There is a network of some 60 kilometres of walking and mountain bike trails suitable for all ages and levels of fitness in the Kleinrivier Mountains behind Hermanus, which you get to via Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
