The Apartheid Museum tour is something amazing. The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is acknowledged as the pre-eminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story.

Apartheids-museum-tour-content-2

Beginning in 1948, the white elected National Party government implemented the policy of apartheid which turned 20 million people into second class citizens, damning them to a life of servitude, humiliation and abuse. Their liberation in 1994, with the election of Nelson Mandela, the prisoner who became president, is a climax in the saga of a nation’s resistance, courage and fortitude. The Apartheid museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of the apartheid.

The exhibits have been assembled and organized by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, filmmakers, historians and designers. They include provocative film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts illustrating the events and human stories that are part of the epic saga, known as apartheid.

A series of 22 individual exhibition areas takes the visitor through a dramatic emotional journey that tells a sad story of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the struggle of the majority to overthrow this tyranny.

For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid museum is fundamental.

The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own.

Review from TripAdvisor

We started our day being picked up from our house by our guide Mdu. He was extremely pleasant and from the word go told us about the things we were passing by. We had to drive through pretty slow traffic to pick up other passengers but we didn’t mind as he was pointing out things the whole time. Our first stop was Constitution Hill, very interesting place and Mdu was very knowledgable. Next was drive through central Johannesburg with yet more information on our surroundings then up to the 50th floor of the Carlton Building or ‘Top of Africa’. Wonderful views and lots more info from Mdu. We then made our way to the Apartheid Museum which we had visited before but could go again and again. We had lunch there and Mdu picked us up for the next bit of our tour which was Soweto. Yet again very informative and seeing Soweto was a real experience. We had a chance to see the freedom charter building, purchase some local crafts then a local guide took us into the area he lived in which was mostly tin shacks. The people there are living in terrible conditions but welcome visitors as a charity is running to help educate their children so they feel if people see they are more likely to help. We then went to see Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu’s street. Mandela house is optional visit as it is a museum. This was the end of our tour and all that remained was for Mdu to drop of all the passengers to their hotels or homes. Big thank you to him for a great day.
